What to Expect at Your First Physical Therapy Session
If you've never been to physical therapy, your first appointment can feel intimidating. It shouldn't. Modern PT is hands-on, conversational, and designed to give you control over your recovery from day one. Here's exactly what happens.
Why You Don't Need to Be Nervous
Patients often arrive expecting a clinical, intimidating environment. The reality at Pain Center of Morris is the opposite. one-on-one attention, plain-language explanations, and a therapist whose only job that hour is helping you move and feel better.
Before Your Visit
- What to wear: comfortable, loose clothing you can move in, and athletic shoes
- What to bring: insurance card, photo ID, referral (if you have one. not required in NJ), list of current medications, and any prior imaging or X-rays
- When to arrive: 15 minutes early so you can complete intake paperwork
Step 1: Intake and Health History
Karl G. Hao Cuenco, PT, sits down with you to review your medical history, current symptoms, pain levels, what makes them better or worse, and. most importantly. your goals. Want to lift your grandchild without back pain? Run a 5K again? Return to work? Your goals shape the entire plan.
Step 2: Physical Examination
Range-of-motion testing. Strength assessment. Posture analysis. Functional movement screening. The exam isn't about cataloging everything that hurts. it's about identifying the root cause so we treat the source, not just the symptoms.
Step 3: Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
You leave the first session knowing exactly what's going on, why it's happening, how many sessions are likely needed, which techniques will be used, and what a realistic recovery timeline looks like. No vague answers, no open-ended commitments.
Step 4: Your First Treatment
Most patients begin treatment the same day. Depending on your condition, this may include manual therapy (hands-on joint and soft-tissue work), therapeutic exercises, modalities like heat/ice/electrical stimulation, and a home exercise program you can do between visits.
After Your Visit
Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is normal. your body is doing new work. You'll have specific home exercises to do, usually 10–15 minutes a day. Most patients return 1–3 times per week initially, then taper as they improve.
NJ Direct Access. No Referral Required
New Jersey allows direct access to physical therapy. You do not need a doctor's referral. You can call Pain Center of Morris and book directly. This saves you weeks of waiting and an unnecessary office visit copay.
